Son Jarocho Collective
The Son Jarocho Collective is a new project of cultural expression that integrates the Indigenous and Afro-Mexicano music traditions of the Son Jarocho, a 300 year old music form born of resistance and rebellion along the sea ports of the Papaloapan and Quetzalcoalcos Rivers in Veracruz, Mexico. The Son Jarocho Collective lends another dimension of cultural revival and regeneration to the community empowerment efforts of TONATIERRA, adding the necessary experience of celebration to our grassroots community organizing initiatives. In this year 2019, International Year of Indigenous Languages, the project is formulating an exchange of traditional knowledge traditions that will focus on the regeneration of the Nahuatl language in the verse form of the Son Jarocho, and set the foundation for a long range intergenerational language revitalization project that integrates music, community celebration, and self-determination.
